Richard Joseph Schretter ,71 of Ross Court, Port Ewen, died Wednesday, April 24th, 2019 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Broadway Campus following a long illness.
He was born in Staten Island, NY on February 1st, 1948, a son of the late Matthew and Marie C. (Matthews) Schretter.
He attended St. Peter's Boy's High School, Staten Island and then went on to Brooklyn College of Pharmacy at Long Island University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy.
He married Bonnie R. Loesch in 1970 and were married 33 years. She passed away in 2003.
In his early years, Richard worked for the Corner Drug Store, Staten Island and then moved to the Kingston area, where he worked for Mack Drugs, and then for NYS Taconic Developmental Disabilities in Wassaic as a pharmacist for over 33 years.
Richard had many hobbies from model railroading to collecting coins and stamps. He also was a longtime fan of the Jets football team and Yankees baseball team. He was also very charitable and would donate to many different charities and organizations including two of his favorites, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Wounded Warriors.
Richard leaves behind his daughter Bridget A. (Fred W.) Coddington of Port Ewen and his two sons, Matthew Schretter of Florida and Daniel A. Schretter of Port Ewen, four grandchildren, who were his biggest joy, Richard, Elizabeth and Nicholas Coddington, and Victoria Schretter, and his sister, Louise (Joseph) Irlinger of Staten Island, his niece Maria Irlinger and nephew Mark Irlinger, two grandnieces and two grandnephews, and several cousins.
Friends will be received at the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park on Thursday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, May 3, 2019 at the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Port Ewen. Burial will follow at Wiltwyck Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Richard's memory to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Wounded Warriors, Center for Spectrum Services, or a charity of choice.
