Obituary for Edward W. "Chief" Avery Sr.

Edward W. "Chief" Avery, Sr., 84, of Connelly, passed away while in the comforting presence of his family on Monday, November 19th, 2018 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Broadway Campus.

He was born in Connelly, NY on August 13th, 1934, a son of the late Francis M. and Thelma (Pardee) Avery.

Chief was employed for over 38 years with the Town of Esopus Highway Department, retiring as Deputy Superintendent.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Esopus area and was a lifetime member of Hasbrouck Engine Company in Connelly.

He is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Lois "Cookie" Avery of Connelly, his children, Donna Briglia, and her husband Francis, of Bloomington, Susan Locilento, and her husband Richard, of Hurley, Edward W. "Butch" Avery, Jr. of Connelly, one sister, Joan Avery of New Hampshire, four grandchildren, Kristine Brumbaugh, Jennifer Paris, and Kimberly and Edward Briglia, and four great-grandchildren, Gabby, Jacob, Abigail, Cody, and a fifth expected in May 2019. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He is predeceased by brothers Peter, Francis and James Avery.

The service will begin at 6:45 pm on Friday, November 23, 2018 at the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 4:00 pm to 6:45 pm.

Cremation will be held privately at Wiltwyck Crematory following services.

In lieu of fresh flowers, the family suggests indoor plants for loved ones to take home and nurture in memory of Chief, or a contribution in his memory to:
